Hannah makes them a few at a time from wax that came out of a friend's hives here in the valley. Nothing added. They smell faintly of honey and burn with a warm, steady flame.

Why beeswax
Wax the bees made, and nothing else.
Most candles are paraffin, which is what's left over when crude oil is refined, with dye and fragrance stirred in. Beeswax is what a hive builds its comb from. These candles are that wax, a cotton wick, and a lot of dipping.
- It smells like honey
- Faintly, the way the inside of a hive does. There is no added scent, so a room never smells of "vanilla cupcake", just of a candle burning.
- It burns slow and bright
- Beeswax melts at a higher temperature than paraffin or soy, so a taper lasts longer and the flame sits warmer and steadier.
- Nothing added
- No paraffin, no soy, no dye, no fragrance oil. The colour is the colour of the wax, and it varies a little from batch to batch because the hives do.
- The white film is a good sign
- Pure beeswax grows a soft white bloom as it sits. Wipe it off with a cloth, or warm it away with a hairdryer, or leave it. Cut wax never does that.
- From a friend's hives
- The wax comes from Paxton at As It Is In Heaven, whose hives sit on organic farms around the Treasure Valley. Raw and unfiltered, from about 500 hives, and nothing goes in the post.
- Dipped, not poured
- A taper is built up one thin layer at a time, dipped and hung to cool and dipped again. The twisted ones are two of those, wound together while the wax is still warm.

Looking after them
Trim the wick
To about a quarter inch before you light it. A long wick makes a tall, smoky flame and the candle drips.
Keep it out of drafts
A taper in still air burns straight down with almost no drip. Next to an open window it leans and runs.
Never leave it burning alone
Burn within sight, away from anything that can catch fire, and out of reach of children and pets. Snuff it before you leave the room.
